I got a package from my Knitty SP today!!! I got a Vogue Knitting magazine, which already has many projects on my "to do" list. Wonderful tea and chocolate. mmmmm! Two skeins of Karaoke yarn from Southwest Trading Co, which I am so totally excited to try! I have already been on Ravelry, searching for pattern ideas. Row counters (I only had one, and was so desperate for more!!), scissors, pins, and measuring tapes, some bags to hold my skeins (this is great for fair isle work - that's how I keep it from tangling), a book called the "Homeowners Headache Solver" (did I need that or what?!).....all in such a cute cute strawberry bag. I can tell my SP did some snooping and stalking on me! My SP is wonderful!!!! :)
A blog full of everyday life, knitting, crafting, being a mother..... and I still wish I were Buffy.

Feeling so Far Removed from Myself
This is the first pastel I ever did.

This is my favorite that I did.... it's my cat Loverbunny, and it makes me chuckle every time I view it. I wanted it to be a light hearted and whimsical painting.
Actually, this picture isn't of the finished product, but it's all I have. I had not done touch ups or added whiskers yet.

I've been thinking about getting back into the pastels, but I have no idea when I'd find time. I can't find time to knit, when am I going to add in pastels?
This weekend was a musical treat... I saw Nickel Creek with Glen Phillips.
Knitting updates: To the toes on a Monkey, and I took a deep breath and ripped out the Pea Pod Baby Collar.

My Monkey Flap Seems Too Big.
I still haven't ripped the collar out of the Peapod Baby sweater. Partly because when I'm working, I don't have time to knit. I barely have enough sleeping time. But, part of it is just the dread of trying to fix it.
I'm also having trouble sticking to one project. I have 4 different things that I'm working on.. or need finishing. I just can't focus. My new thing I am daydreaming about is a tank. I have been thinking about several different knitted tanks... I can't let myself start another project - or the others may never get finished!!
Oh, and the Brea bag isn't even sewn together yet, but I'm already fantasizing about Damask.. a new bag from Berroco.

I Have *$(*ing Poison Ivy
I don't know how I got it, but it really itches. :(
And I had one of the top 3 worst nights at work last night. :(

Bad Yarn Store Experience
However, the last one on my trip was much different. I have visited there before, and they have never been overly nice to me, but never mean either. It is called the Stitch Niche. Now, I hate talking age groups in knitting, but the other two yarn stores do seem for a younger crowd, while the Stitch Niche seems to only have older women working and shopping there. Of course, it doesn't phase me as I've made friends with all ages through knitting. I guess I always thought the ladies at the Stitch Niche didn't seem overly nice because I am so young. Hell, I look 13. I always gave them the benefit of the doubt, and thought perhaps they didn't know how to make conversation with me. At the other shops, we talk about blogs, internet patterns, but when I've mentioned that to these ladies they look at me as if I have a third head.
My experience Saturday:
I am browsing through the store, my purchase yarn in hand, and a lady was getting assistance from one of the employees. She wanted something different than what the employee kept handing her. When she did find a yarn the lady liked, they only had 6 balls of it. She finally, very politely asked if there was any other yarn stores in town. The employee then proceeded to speak to this lady in a tone I've never heard - like a queen talking down to a peasant. She literally stuck her nose in the air and said "We are the ONLY yarn store in town, unless you plan on going to Michaels, which would be a very disappointing visit!" When she hit the word "only", her voice actually went up an octave. She walks off, and I approached the lady and quietly said, "Actually, there are 2 other yarn stores." Another customer joined in, "Yes, and very nice ones!" and the other customer begins to give her directions.
It really enraged me at first, but then I thought... I should give the employee the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she doesn't realize there are two other yarn stores. I'm not sure how she wouldn't know that, but maybe she doesn't. (I've actually heard one of the other stores, mention her store to customers before.)
So, I have my purchases, and I make my way to the counter. The two workers are chatting with apparent regulars, who are also older (as in over 60). I don't mind, I can enjoy the eye candy of yarn around the counter. Finally, one says "Maam give me your stuff". I hand it to her, smiling, but I don't get a smile back. She starts to add up my purchase, and I say "Could you wind those for me too?" (At this store, it costs 50 cents a skein to be wound, where as at other stores it is free, but I know this and I'm ok with paying a fee for the winding.) She looks at me with a harsh glare and says "Well, it will be a few minutes!!!" I say "That's ok, then, nevermind." She then starts ranting about how she could do it, but it takes a while for her to wind it so I would be held up. I kind of startled, and said "Oh, I thought you meant I was in line behind other customers, but I know how long it takes to wind a ball of yarn, I'm ok waiting."
So, she has me swipe my credit card. Then, after my card is swiped, she turns to the other store employee, with my balls of yarn in her hand. She says "I am SO tired of winding YARN for people all day!" She then went to her ball winder and ignored me while chatting with the ladies at the counter.
It made me so angry. When I was telling my mom this story, she said "Why didn't you tell her to just keep the yarn?" and I squeaked "Because I already swiped my credit card!"
The more I thought about the way they acted through my whole shopping experience, the angrier I got. They had put a cast of anger and unhappiness over my day out, especially since they were my last stop. So, I am officially boycotting "The Stitch Niche". I can go to the other shops, and get treated like I'm a friend, and if the other shops don't have what I need, I can get it from an online store that is great like The Loopy Ewe.

I had a pea pod disaster.
We are going shopping today and out to have some fun, and I am so looking forward to it. My husband cracks me up because he said "I guess we have to stop at every yarn shop in town too?" but I think he secretly likes my knitting. When I told him I couldn't get a good picture of my Monkey sock yesterday, he took great pains to get one for me. Then, he started browsing my favorites on Ravelry. He seemed to really like this Clapotis.

"I mock you with my monkey pants!"

Eye Candy-less Friday
Knitting progress: I am currently attempting to pick up stitches on the Pea Pod Baby sweater collar. Started working on a Monkey sock, and have been extremely disappointed. My mother wants socks - "with brown yarn that has lighter flecks in it". So, under some delusional shopping moment, I picked up Lorna's Laces Safari colorway with the illusion that she would like it. Ha! No way she would like it. It is a very dark brown with some light brown in it, but it stripes up like a tiger. I don't mind the yarn, but I think it hides the beauty of the Monkey pattern. I am going to finish them and keep them for myself, and consider it a good practice of the Monkey pattern (which I love, love, love).... because I plan on making Monkey with my new Socks that Rock yarn. I have never bought Socks that Rock before, so I am excited to see how it knits up. I bought the "Pink Granite" colorway!

Shaved Kitties

I know she doesn't look happy in the picture, but she always looks grumpy... really, she is acting very cute with her new look.
Still working slowly on the pea pod baby sweater. I'm on the sleeves. I've been working the last three nights, so that has really slowed me down on it. Maybe I'll make progress this weekend! I also haven't forgotten my Brea bag, but I'm having trouble ordering a handle... I also plan on finishing up the sewing on my little Crafty Alien raccoon this weekend.
I also finally got an invite to Ravelry. It is well worth it's wait!!!!!!! You can find me here.
Well, I'm off to go scrape a little wallpaper in the library. We've had in four electricians, two heating and air people, a plaster person (what title do they have?), a plumber, and a roofer. So, once we choose who we want to hire, and get the finances straight, we'll be ready to work.

If you have nothing nice to say....
Still working on my pea pod sweater. I'm close to finishing the body, and will be starting on the sleeves soon. I'm thinking about the socks I am going to make my mom... thinking maybe the monkey socks would be good with the safari Lorna's Laces I got.
One of my friends was in from California last night, and we went out to dinner, then she came over. The first thing she said was that she couldn't wait to see Amos. It was sad... I had to tell her he passed away in December. He was such a good kitty, everyone liked him.
Maybe next time I blog, I'll have something more exciting to say.

pea pod baby sweater

The pea pod baby sweater in progress. That big brown string is a make-shift stitch marker.
Speaking of stitch markers, a girl in my town makes jewelry, and I am going to hire her to make me some cute stitch markers. I hope she doesn't care that I am getting ready to promote her etsy shop... but she is very talented. She has some cute earrings up right now! E.T.B. Accessories.
We went to Louisville, and I went to a LYS there called the Knit Nook. It was such a cute shop, friendly staff, and I highly recommend checking it out if you are ever in Louisville!
Quick Edit to add the link to the Pea Pod Baby Sweater pattern and picture! It's a free pattern from Interweave Knits.

Pea Pod Baby Sweater and a Silent Paint Remover

Right now, I am currently sitting here waiting for a delivery. Our Silent Paint Remover. It requires a signature upon delivery, and well, our doorbell isn't very good. If I go upstairs or to the back bedroom, I won't be able to hear it.
Well, after I got over my sickness, I went on a yarn store spree. I went to all three yarn stores within an hour of my house, and I bought something from each and every one of them. At Magpie Yarns, I bought the newest Interweave Knits magazine. Then, at ReBelle, she was getting in a shipment of Crafty Alien kits, and I just had to buy a kitten and the raccoon. (In fact, I bought them before she could get them on the shelf.) My raccoon is ready to be sewn together soon:

To end up my yarn store spree, I went to the Stitch Niche and got my Debbie Bliss yarn for this baby sweater.
One other very cool thing that happened..... I got an email from Guido of the podcast, It's a Purl, Man telling me I won from a contest he was having! He had a survey about his podcast a while back and by answering the survey, you were entered in the drawing. I won the book Hollywood Knits, and I can't wait to get it. Check out his podcast if you haven't heard about it yet!
Tomorrow, I am going to go with my husband to Louisville. He has a work conference, and I'm tagging along. While he does his conference thing in the day, I am going to shop and find some knitting stores.

Bats and the 7 Things Meme
First of all... how do you get rid of bats? I *thought* we had bats in our attic because the last two times I was up there, I thought I heard one. Everyone, including my husband, tried to appease me. It was mice, birds, my imagination.... Even one of my patients, who knew my family, assured me that it was probably just squirrels.
But, last night, we took some friends up there, and a bat nose dived at us. I took off running with the female friend right behind me. The guys tried to act macho and stay up there, but I could tell they were shaken up a little.
Now, on to the 7 things meme. No one tagged me, but I'm doing it anyway.
1. I have two degrees, BA in Art and my BSN (nursing). I also finished up all Pre-Pharmacy courses.
2. My family jokingly calls me the cat whisperer. Give me enough time, and I can make friends with any cat. Also, it seems cats randomly find me. I've saved several cats in the last few years. The latest was Poe, who now lives with a friend's daughter, who I found bleeding from the mouth and nose in the middle of a road. (She is a happy, healthy kitty now.)
3. I grew up in Eastern KY. My family didn't have city water until I was almost a teenager. When I was a baby, it snowed in our house. I have pictures. I didn't realize we would have been considered poor until I was an adult.
4. I have been to China. I can speak a little Mandarin, but not well.
5. I have a thyroid disorder, hypothyroidism. It makes me unusually tired at times.
6. We bought our home to restore in November of 2006. It's our dream home.
7. My dad has 11 brothers and sisters. I have 22 living cousins from that side.

Planning future projects
I've been daydreaming about future projects. I really shouldn't be because I have too many unfinished ones....
After the plumbing is fixed, we will be redoing the upstairs bathroom. There is this wooden window shutter that has four open panels. Right now, some really nasty stained fabric is in the openings, but I am thinking of knitting some lace panels to replace them with. You can see it in the photo below.... any ideas of what pattern I could use? Or what yarn? I am going to put some new white bead board up, wallpaper, tear that stuff out from around the tub, and put up a Victorian tub shower attachment.

Also, I am still trying to figure out what to do with the yarn I bought at Shakertown. It actually makes me nuts to have stuff in my stash that doesn't have a purpose..... an assigned "to do". I have 630 yards of 100% wool Red Clover... here is a picture... any ideas?

Back to work tonight.
Oh, and someone emailed me asking why I didn't blog about nursing anymore. Well, I started out blogging about nursing school, but that's over. I don't like to mention even vague references about anything or anyone because of the privacy laws. You just never know. I also do so much nursing these days, I don't like thinking too much about it at home. I practically live at the hospital it seems, so I enjoy the other parts of my life while at home. Hope that explains it.

Sealed door open!!
I have absolutely no knitting to show you. I haven't done any knitting all weekend. Not even the hint of stockinette stitch. We have been tearing this house down.... the ceiling of the butler's pantry got torn out so they can fix the upstairs bathroom plumbing.
The best thing this weekend, though.... we got a sealed door open. A pocket door at that. It sealed the soon to be library shut from the foyer. Whoever owned this house sealed it shut by locking it, then caulking around it on both sides. The door is off it's track right now, so it doesn't open or close smoothly... but that will get fixed whenever we can find someone who understands the mechanics of pocket doors.
Maybe now that we've accomplished some things around the house, I can rest and knit some tonight.

Short update.
I cast on again for the Marshmallow Bonnet. I am using a different yarn, and this time I will be more cautious on the mattress stitch. I have a plain sock cast on as well.
As for our house, we tore down the wood paneling in the library. I'll get some pictures maybe this weekend. It looks bigger now. They glued it straight down to layers of wallpaper, but actually that is better than gluing it to the plaster. We took two large truckloads of trash to the recycle place today.
We also are getting estimates on fixing the upstairs bathroom plumbing today, and estimates on rewiring the whole house on Thursday.
Sorry, no pictures today. I feel like I just got off my four days of work, and I'm already going back tonight!

FO: Inca Snowflake Hat

Pattern: Inca Snowflake Hat from itty-bitty hats by Susan B. Anderson
Yarn: Noro Kureyon #95, and I honestly can't remember what the white yarn is. If I find my ball band, I'll update.
Needles: US #7 16 inch circular A Japanese Bamboo circ needle that I have no idea the name of.
This was such a fun knit!
More on Brea Bag

I am really loving this bag.
Now, I mentioned a podcast earlier. SSK, is a podcast by Shannon and Stephanie. They are hilarious, give good information, and make you feel like you are listening to your best friends chatting it up. I definitely recommend you download it and give it a listen! They also love paranormal stuff, and that makes me love them even more!
Other podcasts that I would recommend are: Cast On (Brenda is the queen of podcasts. So professional!), Lime & Violet (oh so funny too!), Sticks & String (really excellent info), and this podcast, Unwound, is no longer, but I recommend listening to what episodes are there. I will really miss the Unwound podcast.
I admit it. I am a podcast junkie. I listen to other podcasts, too, but those are all the ones I subscribe to! If you want to recommend a podcast to me, I'd love to hear it.
Also, there is a contest on Skeins Her Way where you post your summer goals. I found out about it through Musings of a (mostly) self-taught knitter. If you go enter the contest, please let her know that I sent you!
My summer goals include:
- make a lace shawl or stole
- finish Wicked (the longest project ever. I don't mean to ignore her, but it's hot.)
- socks!
- do a better job when it comes to finishing objects
- make another Brea bag for my friend Beth
Also, I was asked why I switched from Blogger to Wordpress. I think Wordpress has more to offer. I think it's more user friendly. It has easy access to your blog stats - how many people came, what links they clicked, where they came from.... I am sure that Blogger could probably do all the same things, but it seems Wordpress is just easier. Also, Blogger has lost a few of my posts in the middle of my writing them.
If you have any suggestions on things to make my blog more interesting, let me know! Also, I am trying to come up with a customized header idea, so I'd love to hear those as well.

My new blog home.
I guess I'll start off by updating on my knitting progress.
I currently have on my needles:
Brea, a free pattern from Berroco. I think this pattern is genius. It's simple enough to do anywhere, but complex enough to keep your attention.
Better Than Booties, a free Interweave Knits pattern. However, I have to admit this is giving me fits. Not the pattern, but me. Size zero needles are hard for me, obviously. It may not get a match.. I hate to say it.
I got my package from Jimmy Beans Wool the other day, and they have great customer service. Very quick delivery.

Well, I'm off to a good start, I guess.
I will be moving soon
http://wishiwerebuffy.wordpress.com/
I am working on it now. Trying to update my blogroll, links, etc.... please keep coming by!

Shakertown
We were at Shakertown today. Here are a few of the photos we took.
It was a beautiful and peaceful day.

The animals were all really friendly.
This sheep just said something really funny.
The babies looked sweet.

I bought this yarn in the craft store. It was from Shakertown sheep! Any idea of what to make with it? I have 3 hanks, 210 yards each.
I took the boat trip down the Kentucky River, but I didn't have my camera on me. My friend did, and if he sends me pictures, I'll try and post them.

Baby hat fever
Inca Snowflake Hat from Itty Bitty Hats by Susan B. Anderson. Mine will not be having snowflakes. I tried, but it was a miserable attempt. I will be adding the tassels, though. As soon as I get into a pom making kind of mood. My picture is sort of dark... but you can get the main idea of it.
Then I started the Marshmallow Bonnet in pink. And it was going great until I tried to mattress stitch the seams. It sucked, I couldn't figure out what was going on. I quite possibly have ruined this hat with the seams. I won't even show you, it's so embarrassing. I did decide to finish it anyway, just to understand the assembly of the piece if nothing else. It looks great as long as you don't look at the backside. I had a birthday last week. It was great. My husband took me out to a great dinner. When I got in the car, there was a big pink bag with a card and some Knit Picks Options knitting needles inside! The card was lovely, and it was fitting. It had a woman sitting on a paint can drinking coffee, looking up at her husband on a ladder painting the wall (a heart on the wall).
And speaking of our home restoration....
We cut down some trees around our driveway (the first picture view is as you are leaving our drive. The trees were past the flowers...). We also had some really bad overgrown stuff taken out and the stumps are going to be removed soon.

Also, we moved our bedroom downstairs because we have no air conditioning. And it's hot here, and only going to get more toasty as the summer progresses. One night, it was particularly hot.. and I woke up with a massive migraine. So, that day my husband put in a window air conditioner downstairs in a room that is a little cooler naturally and moved our bed down.
Well, off to watch Heroes. (I finally caught back up by watching them on the internet!)

Finally - a finished project!

Brittany Birch #2 needles, Claudia Handpainted Yarn (Bootcamp), and it took FOREVER. I used the pattern for Garter Rib Socks from Sensational Knitted Socks.
As of tonight, I will have worked the last 5 out of 6 nights. I switched a day with someone because I will go home to see my parents this weekend. My mom had surgery on her shoulder. Torn rotator cuff and some bone spurs. I hopefully can help cook and do things around the house.
I have not seen the latest Heroes and it is making me crazy! I hear it was excellent. I've got it downloading on iTunes now. I know I can watch it for free off NBC website, but our internet connection has been really bad the last few days and it won't play correctly.

I broke a needle!
So, I started knitting on Wicked again. I had forgotten how much I love her.
Also, I went and bought like $80 worth of flowers and veggies today and planted them. Please god, let them live. I have never had a green thumb, but I'm trying. Really! I planted them, talked to them, watered them with a little extra Miracle Grow added.... and I promised them I'd even sing to them if they'd just grow.
I'll try and take pictures later this week.

Yarn Harlot and More!
I saw a panel called A Good Yarn: Knitters, Fiction, and More! at 11 am. It had Susan Anderson of Itty Bitty Hats, who I met before it started and got a signed book from her. She was fabulous! She was so so nice, and I have decided I adore her. I can't wait to make baby hats! It also had Ann Hood who wrote The Knitting Circle, and she was captivating. Last, but you know never least, it also had Stephanie Japel who wrote Fitted Knits.
Then, at 2, I saw the Yarn Harlot speak. I met her before hand and bought *3* of her books and had them signed. She took a picture with me and I held her sock! I am sure she thought I was a babbling idiot because I was soooo excited and just gushing. In fact, I can't remember anything I said, except.... She told me my sock was perfectly executed, and I started trying to point out my errors. She said "You aren't supposed to tell people!!! Just say thank you!!"
I started knitting in December, and I have never ever ever knit with other knitters before. I was shy about maybe doing my stitches weird or looking stupid.... At the table I was sitting, I had soooo many encouraging words and it was just wonderful.
So, here's my picture of me and the Yarn Harlot. I have her sock, she has mine. And my hair looks like I'm eating it - sorry.
