Working on....

I haven't posted because I've been sick. S I C K. Then, I had to work work work.

Today's my first day off that I haven't been sick! So, I thought I'd show you what I am working on for pleasure....

I was knitting Wicked, then switched to those socks for my dad. Yeah, they won't be getting done for his birthday, but he'll get them sometime. Here is sock #1 in progress. I'm using the Garter Rib sock pattern from Sensational Knitted Socks.
I am taking a room of my own to work on in the house.....
Here are before pictures, and soon I will be going in there to strip all that wallpaper to see what those walls look like underneath. Will they be a disaster? After stripping that, I plan on stripping woodwork, scraping off that terrible textured ceiling, and pulling up the carpet. Once I get down to the bare minimum, I'll fix her back up again.
Before pictures:

Ok, I had more pictures but since Blogger never works right, it isn't loading them.....

I'll try again later!

Ok.... saved version.... let's see if I can continue this post.......

Blogger still didn't like my medium sized pictures. Oh well.

While I was waiting for Blogger to not hate me, I went to pull some wallpaper to see what was underneath. And what the heck!? Under the top layer of wallpaper is fabric. This white linen was put on the wall? Whyyyy???? Then, under that tons more old wallpaper, and looks like my plaster *IS* going to be in fact... a DISASTER.

And Molly LOVES Sensational Knitted Socks! Of course, then her owner
can't read it, but she doesn't consider that her problem!!

RN

I just peeked at our Board of Nursing website and I'm registered as an active RN with a license number as of today!

*BIGSIGHOFRELIEF*

Major Stress

I am under some stress today.

Yesterday was my NCLEX. I have no idea how I did. I keep running through my head what the heck I'm going to do if I failed.

After the test, I needed some comfort. So, I found it at the yarn shop. I bought the book, Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Schurch. I also bought some beautiful Claudia Handpainted Yarn called "Bootcamp". It is black with bits of green and burnt orange. Absolutely beautiful. I am planning to make my dad socks for his birthday, but since I'm a slow knitter, who knows if I will finish them. My mom said "Oh well, if you don't, then there is always Christmas." Ever optimistic mom.

Quick note on my house restoration. My husband read that while many people think homes in the Victorian era had mostly crimson for their dining rooms, that really they often used green. So, I'm in search of what shade of green because the tile in the dining room, in fact, is white with green flecks. And I'd prefer green. Any experts out there on Victorian era decorating?

Well, I am off to watch Martha. Have I mentioned how much I love Martha?

I finished a sleeve of Wicked. I really am knitting on her, even if it doesn't seem so.

The mantle is still coming along. Now that it has been warmer, we've been using SoyGel to strip it. We can open the doors and get some circulation. SoyGel doesn't have a strong smell, but I am not into stripping any paint without circulation of air. We've had to use dental picks to get in and around the decoration on the wood.

Well, if you don't hear from me again, my NCLEX is next week. I haven't been studying like I should because I am so sick of books and tests .... So, I need to get it into gear and do some practice questions or something. Please, please, please, let me pass.

"You take a wrong step and you end up wearing yest...

"You take a wrong step and you end up wearing yesterday's underwear, sitting on the carpet trying to teach yourself how to knit."

That's a line from The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs. I am currently in the middle of this excellent book. If you can't knit, it's still a great read. If you can knit, you'll love the knitting and the yarn shop settings.

That is pretty much how I started knitting. I was wallowing in my depression, and then suddenly, I was sitting there trying to learn how to knit. I graduated nursing school, and as happy as I was to be out, I couldn't remember who I was when I wasn't a nursing student. I had just lost my darling cat during finals - a grief that still finds me in the middle of the night and leaves me crying into my pillow. I was lost, lost, lost, and then knitting found me again.

I am not an excellent knitter. Probably not even a good one, in fact. I am slow. I haven't one finished object to show for the year of 2007, and we are well into March. It doesn't really seem to matter. I am still a knitter, finished object or not.

No picture Wednesday -- Wicked continues.

Well, I wanted to wait until I had pictures to post, but that may never happen. My camera is in my husband's car and he keeps forgetting to bring it back in.

Well, I got to the part on my Wicked sweater where I could separate out the sleeves and try it on. It was a little too tight for my taste under the arms. So, after much debate, I decided to rip back and put the sleeves back on and do a few more rows so the armpits weren't so high....

It was a hard decision because I can not frog things to a certain point very well. I've watched all the Knitting Help videos and read lots of things, but I just can't do it well. So, I used a waste thread to pick up my stitches first after I frogged because I always drop tons of stitches otherwise. Now, I am inserting my needle back in.... and I had to quit last night because it was making me crazy.

In other random things to discuss...

Heroes!! When you think it can't get any better, it does!! Claire going into hiding with the Haitian makes me nervous because... well he gives me the creeps. And who was the higher authority telling him not to erase her memory?! And Hiro's daddy! Who knew?

Also, I watched Little Miss Sunshine... it was my favorite favorite movie I've seen in ages. It was so funny and touching. I highly recommend this movie.

We rented Stranger than Fiction last night, and it was odd. It had funny moments, but for the most part it wasn't my favorite of movies....

What else have we rented? (We don't have cable anymore, so we rent a lot of movies.) The Prestige. My husband thought it was brilliant, and I hated it. The Illusionist, which we both liked. The Devil Wears Prada.. uhm, save your time and money. Well, unless you get a kick out of fashion. Maybe you would like it. Just not my taste.

Well, maybe one day my blog will have pictures again and be more interesting. Until then, keep knitting and send me frogging well-wishes that I don't destroy all my work.

Wicked

I started my first sweater. It's the Wicked pattern from the Zephyr Style girls. I am using Cascade 220 Heathers and Addi Turbo #7 circulars. I frogged it once because well....

I accidentally overdosed myself on Aleve Cold and Sinus the other night. Yes, I'm a nurse, so I should know better. However, in my defense -- I woke up and couldn't breath, quit sneezing, and my eyes were all itchy. I stumbled downstairs and grabbed them thinking it was what we always buy (Advil Cold and Sinus). I realized they were white instead of orange but I didn't give it much thought as I continued to sneeze. So, five minutes later, my husband realized I had taken two extended release tablets. Oops. So, I was very jittery and nervous after they set in.

Never let friends knit while drinking, or while hopped up on too much cold medicine. Because they ruin projects, and must frog.

Now, I finally am back on track....

Eatin' good in the neighborhood?

We went to Applebee's last night for dinner. I was going to order one of the new combo things that came with the appetizer, entree, and a dessert. Well, when I ordered the sirloin n' shrimp, I was told they were out of "spin dip". Well, that was ok as they told me they were substituting it with some queso.....

I got my meal. The broccoli was still in the microwaveable bag. Is this normal?!

Also, no queso to be seen. So I requested it again, and I was brought out some weird cheese thing. It seemed like a melted a block of Velveeta and someone threw in some parsley. It was disgusting - so much so, my husband who usually eats anything could not even eat it. In fact, he said "That is something that will bring tears to your eyes!" The only thing I had to dip with anyway was one piece of buttered bread that was quartered.

So, I didn't eat my appetizer and opened my own broccoli and dumped it out on my plate....

It was a meal that left much to be desired.

On the house front, we decided to strip some paint off the mantle in what will be our library. It is GORGEOUS underneath that nasty poop brown paint! It's a beautiful oak mantle with lots of detail that couldn't be seen underneath the layers of paint. If anyone knows what to do with those white tiles, let me know. Do I just clean them and regrout them? I am really not sure.
We are having trouble getting paint out of some of the grooves, but our friend is giving us something called SoyGel that removes paint... and we are hoping that will get it out of the detailed grooves.

For this room, we are just going to leave the mantle oak... tear down the nasty wood paneling and paint a neutral color. We plan on having big

plush leather chairs to lounge in. Also plan on having a projection tv that comes from the ceiling.

This will be the room we plan on hanging out in the most. My husband and I are happy when surrounded by beautiful things and books. It will be a great knitting spot, too!

As far as knitting, I am still working on those socks. I am the slowest knitter ever. I only do a few rounds, then I get sidetracked. I bought some Cascade 220 Heathers for a sweater yesterday. I may switch over and do the gauge swatch for it today to give myself a sock break.

Let it snow...

It's been snowing a little bit every day... Here is the house with some snow on it.

I wish the inside were as pretty as the outside. But, alas, the 70s struck.... and never left. Lots of wood paneling, etc. We will rip it down in the spring, when we are able to more readily get to the recycle place.

Here is the kitchen before......

Here is the kitchen... as it is now. And it's improved from what it was!!! Nice orange glaze on the cabinets.... The stand the microwave is on was something I found in the basement and repainted. I tore down the wallpaper which was like a scary yellow floral thing, and painted this olive green color. Believe it or not, there is a door in the wall behind that microwave. Yes, a door. I kept ripping down wood paneling that was on the bottom, and revealed the bottom of a door. They didn't even bother to remove it when they built on.... Weirdest thing of all, it's encased in sheet metal, so hard to remove. So my brother in law just drywalled it up for me for now..... if I tore it out, you would have been able to see in the only working bathroom!!!! Also, the pretty door frame was encased in sheet metal as well.... that is torn down and my husband is working on stripping the frame.
The doorway leads to the butler pantry.

This is our bathroom... I wish I had uploaded the before pictures, maybe I can do that later. But, imagine it brown and the claw foot tub encased in wood. We tore the wood out from around it, and painted some. And no, we don't have a shower. Trust me, I've complained about it A LOT.

I'm getting very excited for spring. As soon as the box gutters get repaired, we can really start doing things.

I am finally over the bronchitis. I had to go back to the doctor because I got worse, and I had strep throat and bronchitis at the SAME TIME! And, I had to be on some really strong antibiotics that made me sick sick sick to my stomach. I am still not 100% well, but able to do things now.

Speaking of being able to do things, I finally got back to knitting today! I worked on my Hedera socks. The first one has a few mistakes, but I'm not ripping them out. They are for me, and not that obvious unless you are really looking. Plus, it's my second sock, and I really wanted to focus on the construction of the sock. However, I do love love love this pattern, and believe that my mom may be getting a very nice pair for her birthday. (I will lovingly rip out any mistakes in socks for her.)

Bronchitis.

I have bronchitis.

It all started Saturday - I woke up with a bit of a sore throat. I figured it was my allergies (I'm allergic to the whole wide world), and medicated myself well. Sunday, it was worse. I started taking Advil. Monday, it was really really sore and raw. It was my only symptom! I looked in my own throat, and it looked a little red but no white spots or signs of anything too serious....

I had to work on Monday night. I thought about calling in, but we are only allowed 5 unplanned absences in one year. Uhm, it's only Jan. and it was only a sore throat. So, I medicated with Advil and went on to work. Yes, I washed my hands every freaking minute and I wore masks around patients who are immunocompromised. Well, as Monday night wore on, I felt worse and worse. I started to get this dry cough.....

By the time I left Tuesday morning, I felt really bad and thought perhaps I should go to the doctor before it continued to get worse. Also, my chest was not hurting but feeling very heavy. It was hard to breathe when I went into the cold air.

Glad I did. He said I had acute pharyngitis and the beginnings of bronchitis and he wanted to go ahead and treat me with antibiotics. Later that day, my cough began coming from my chest, hurting my chest, and just awful. I felt so bad I couldn't even sleep.

I still feel like crap. I feel guilty that I went to work with this, but I didn't know... it was in the process of blooming into full bronchitis. I kept assuming it was allergies. (I did have a cyst in my sinuses last year - I'm prone to allergy complications.)

Anyway, my husband just called to check on me. I said "I feel too bad to knit." He replied "Oh shit, that's sick."

House

My good friend HoosierNurse wanted to see my house. This is for you!!

We have to get the box gutters fixed/replaced. They are leaking, which is making our walls have big wet spots in places. Ugh! But, once they are fixed, and our roof is checked to ensure everything is ok (in the spring), we are going to hire someone to fix our plaster. We also are hoping to get it rewired soon.

I bought this yarn today. Of course, my stupid camera and I don't understand each other, so it doesn't do it justice at all. It reminds me of my favorite ice cream: Black Raspberry Chip.

On my needles now is Hedera (not with this yarn...). I tried taking a picture of it, but my camera just made it all dark and blurry. Maybe I can find a manual for it online. Anyway... my Hedera is in a plain off-white color.

Bad Mood Tuesday

I am irritable today.... I don't know why really. I need to snap out of it.

I was looking on flickr, and I found something that irks me. This girl had awesome pictures, and had the same camera I have. When I take pictures, they look like crap. I've been blaming the camera, but I guess it's just me. I don't know how to work my Canon Powershot.

Also, I watched the Today show today because I've been up since 5:30. (Night shifts are screwing with my head)... and can Al Roker be more annoying and rude?! Gah.

Wish I had prettier pictures of my sock, but alas, I can't work my camera obviously.

Oh well -- let's talk about something fun. Heroes! Does anyone else love love love this show as much as I do??? When I woke up at 5:30 this morning, I didn't want to wake my husband... so I thought of all the similarities that Heroes has with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Buffy still remains the best show ever made.)

1. It has a cheerleader who is very popular. She finds out she has a gift, and becomes very unpopular.
2. Great script. Great one-liners....
3. The sidekicks/friends don't all have superpowers. Sometimes, the best heroes are the loyal ones with no special gift.
4. It shares an actor. Leonard Roberts. He is D.L. Hawkins in Heroes, a man who can sink into walls and pass through things. In Buffy, he was Forrest, one of the guys in the Initiative.

I actually had more thought out, but I forgot them since this morning. Anyway, Heroes is my favorite new show. Save the Cheerleader. Save the World.

Ok, I am going to quit wasting time and go knit or do something productive.

Socks and Lace

Well, I have been knitting, but nothing much to show for it.

This is the first sock I have ever attempted. I must say I hate hate hate hate hate this. Not the sock part. The "I picked a boring pattern" sock. It's just a basic sock with straight stockinette stitch. Too much stockinette stitch makes a girl crazy.

And this brown thingie is supposed to be Branching Out from Knitty. I'm doing it in this yarn. It appealed to me because it was 100% bamboo and felt like butter. Only problem is that it splits easily..... at least on me it does. I have frogged it too many times to count, and this yarn cannot really withstand being unraveled several times. I just wanted to learn lace. I was ready to forget this project, but finally I read some things online that made me feel better. I read that many people said it didn't look good at all until it was blocked. That gives me hope. Plus, I finally feel like I'm starting to get the hang of it. Just ignore my very pink waste yarn. :)

And this is a picture of my 5 year old baby - Sam. Not the best picture in the world, but you can still see his total cuteness. I bottle fed Sam. He's such a big boy now.

Just an update

I have nothing new to say or show you. I've been in orientation all week long. No time to knit! I had to take a medication test today in order to be allowed to pass medications, and I passed. It was a busy week.....

I guess I'm just updated to prove I'm still here.

Finished Center Square Hat!

I finished the Center Square hat. It might have been too ambitious for a third project? But, I'm happy how it turned out. You can tell that I got better on my tension as I worked my way up the hat. What I had the most trouble with was using the double pointed needles to work the top. In fact, I think I really goofed on the top, but that's ok. I never used double pointed needles until this project. This actually was a great learning project for me. It was a quick hat too. A more advanced knitter could finish this in an evening probably!

Sorry for my pictures. They aren't the best in the world.

Work in Progress

This is Center Square from Knitty

It's my third project. It's probably pretty stupid to do fair isle on your third project, but it's going ok. Once I figured out the best way for me to hold the yarns and keep them from tangling, it goes quick. I can't for the life of me hold yarn in each hand.... I'm not that knitting graceful.

I know, I know. It's not very original for the colors, but I liked pink and red. I think I will give it to my friend Beth.

Rip Rip Rip

I just started a new project and have already ripped it out. I always pick things they are probably above my level, but I *hate* dishcloths. And I'm a sink or swim kind of girl.

I got my provisional license today. It made my stomach turn a little bit. I'm very excited about it, but you also realize what a big responsibility you have taken on. I start on Monday. First two weeks are classes.

Also, another kitty milestone with Loverbunny. He actually let me trim his claws yesterday. I couldn't believe it!!! Now if Miss Molly would just let me trim hers......

It's Hard Being an Outdoor turned Indoor Kitty!

I have to give a backstory on Molly and Loverbunny. When we lived out in the country a few years ago, a big fat kitty showed up outside in my front yard. I went out to see her, and she was the friendliest kitty ever. Very pregnant, but very friendly. That evening, I say to my husband that we better go check to see if she's still out there. Sure enough - she was having kittens on my front porch. She was letting us touch her as she was giving birth, which I thought was odd since we were strangers to her. I knew immediately I'd keep her.

Months later, a farm down the road wanted the kittens. I took them all to the house a mile away. The next morning, Loverbunny was sitting on my front step. He walked the mile back. So, he got to stay too.

When we moved to the city, we knew we needed to bring them inside. We are too close to a busy main road. They never seemed to like it inside before, and it was hard for them at first. Molly, a deaf (or very very hard of hearing) kitty, found it to be wonderful quickly. She always sleeps at the foot of my bed curled up on the down comforter. Loverbunny has still been having trouble, but last night was a milestone. He jumped up in the bed, curled up against my back between my shoulder blades and fell asleep with me. I think he's getting used to this inside thing. :)

I know Loverbunny is a stupid name for a cat, but I like it.

On the knitting front, I am knitting my second project still. I was a little slowed down because I had to go out of town twice. I take my knitting with me, but had trouble finding time to do it. It's getting there though, and I think my husband is starting to be impressed with it. This one is a bag, and it actually now has the shape of a bag so he can understand it more.

It's in a hot pink Cascade 220 yarn. I love it.

I also discovered the knit.1 magazine from VogueKnitting and I love love love it. Only problem with it was that many of my favorite patterns were a little more advanced than I am. That's ok, I will file it away in my knitting stash for when I'm ready for it!
